This is a project I am working on in the lead up to Brexit. After attending a discussion with the Cambridge Analytica whistle blower Christopher Wylie we bought tickets to Byline Festival, a festival of independent journalism. One of the headline acts was the Russian punk and political protest outfit Pussyriot. Their performance was extraordinary, one of the best gigs I have seen, and a phenomenally provocative political protest. This inspired me to make my work more overtly political, something which to date I have avoided. Shortly after my wife presented me a copy of Maria Alyonkhina’s account of the protest and subsequent jail term Riot Days.
The embroidery I made is the value of the Russian Rouble against the US Dollar from the 17th August 2012, the date Alyonkhina’s sentence started to 23rd December 2013, when she was pardoned by Vladimir Putin.
